How to prevent blocked drains

Keep the water cycle running smoothly!

There are over 40,000 blocked drains in Scotland every year, 80% of the blockages are caused by items being put down the toilet and sink which shouldn't be. Household drains are only 4inches wide and can only take water from sinks, showers, baths and the toilet.  See our guidelines below to prevent blockages in your home. (If you do have a blockage we may ask you to try drain unblocker and to empty the U bend under the sink before a drain specialist is instructed to the property, we are not trying to be difficult by asking you do try these simple steps.)

- Follow the 3 P rule; Only flush peepoo and toilet paper down the toilet
- Keep a bin in the bathroom, this is handy for all items which can't be flushed.

- All wipes (even if they say flushable)
- Sanitary items (towels, tampons and liners)
- Cotton wool, cotton buds, disposable nappies and nappy liners
- Condoms, incontinence pads, colostomy bags, used bandages and contact lenses

Fat, oil and grease may seem harmless as it is liquid but this hardens after time so if it is put down the sink it will harden and stick to the inside of the drains and sewers. This will build up over time.

- Fat, Oil and Grease. Leave these to cool and harden, then put it in the bin
- Before washing dishes make sure you have scraped all the food waste into the bin

Please follow these guidelines to stop so many blockages, it will be beneficial for everyone in the long run!!
